My First Major Crochet Therapy Project

Hilde’s Flower Blanket
Hilde’s Flower Blanket by Lilla Bjorn Crochet is a soothing, intentional project designed to slow the hands and quiet the mind. Each round invites focus without urgency, creating a gentle rhythm that encourages calm, focus, and steady progress.
Worked one section at a time, this blanket becomes less about speed and more about the process—making it especially grounding during seasons of stress or emotional fatigue. The different rounds offer a sense of comfort and control, allowing the mind to decompress while the hands stay purposefully engaged.
This blanket took me around 60 hours and quite a bit of yarn, but it became a daily source of comfort last January, during a very challenging time when my mother was battling COVID, Flu A, and pneumonia. All that was happening, she couldn’t fully understand because of her Alzheimer’s.

For caregivers, this project can become a quiet companion, as it did for me, during long days and emotionally heavy moments. When so much feels unpredictable, returning to familiar stitches provides a small but meaningful sense of steadiness.
As this blanket grows, it also becomes a reminder that peace is something we can return to, even in small moments. “You will keep perfectly peaceful the one whose mind remains on You, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3). In the quiet rhythm of crochet, there is space to release what weighs heavy and to rest in faithful love—stitch by stitch, moment by moment.
I would love to hear from others who have found crochet projects that got them through very difficult times.
